The poems in B.R. Dionysius’s new collection “Not for Heroics”, centre on the quiet resistance and selfless bravery of ordinary individuals variously caught up in extraordinary events and circumstances of grief, death, suffering and loss. These are people (trees and animals) who don’t ask to be valorised but who go about their business – not for fame and not for fortune. These free verse poems and sonnets tenderly and sometimes humourously celebrate family, human connection and interrelationship with the natural world – the full significance of what we inherit and what we can gift. From particles accelerating through a human brain to parents saving their children and children sacrificing themselves for the benefit of an ancient community – these are acts done for the greater good of humanity – not for heroics.
